Sofia Karyofilis (b. 1978)
Sofia Karyofilis is modelling plate metal, mainly by raising technique and in combination with materials like enamel, lime paint, concrete and wood. She creates sculpture and installations as investigations of general conditions and relations, and ways to construct an existence, often based on the container in its simplest form. She explores the use of raising technique by continuously incorporating new materials and by hammering in new ways. Her use of the container lies in the tension between its basic constituents and as a relationship-creating object, and the container as an independent sculptural body. Through her recent work she has gained an interest in creating objects whose size matches her own, as it provides a directness in meeting the work. She is inspired by different architectural expressions and aims to create holistic rooms that are staged as for the viewer to physically enter into them, as sensible, three-dimensional narratives.
